Brodeur Adds to His Records A new | IXGAMES

Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils makes another appearance in the record book of the National Hockey League.  This time he captures the record for the most regular season appearances by a goaltender.  This record was finally sealed when Brodeur was the Devil’s goaltender in their match against the Ottawa Senators in a recent game held at the Prudential Center. Brodeur’s amazing records The record was previously held by Patrick Roy.  In his career that spanned 18 years and 1,029 games, he played as the goaltender for NHL teams Montreal and Colorado.  He finally retired in 2003.  Brodeur’s match on Friday surpassed Roy’s record by one, making him play 1,030 games in 16 seasons.  He has so far played exclusively for the New Jersey team in his professional career. The record which was finally captured by Brodeur was further sweetened by the Devil’s victory over the Canadian team 2-1.  Previous to breaking Roy’s record in the appearances field, he has also broken the two other records also previously held by Roy.  One record was for matches won in the regular season, when the Devils won against the Chicago Blackhawks during the early part of 2009.  Just recently, he also beat his own record of total minutes played when he played against the Boston Bruins.  One record he is currently trying to beat is the most shutouts in the regular season history.  Brodeur is currently tied with Terry Sawchuk in this category with 103. So far, in his 15 years with the New Jersey Devils, the team has won three championships in the Stanley Cup.  For the last 15 years, the team has been to the playoffs consecutively except once.  From the 1996-1997 and 2007-2008 seasons, Brodeur has won at least 35 games every season.  He also holds the distinction of being the only goalie with seven seasons where he had 40 wins.  Among his awards are the Vezina Trophy which he has won four times, the Jennings Trophy which he has won four times as well, and a Calder Memorial Trophy.  He has also been named in the NHL All-Star team ten times.  There are only two NHL goaltenders, he and Ron Hextall, who have scored goals in both the playoffs and the regular season as well.  He also holds statistics such as most overtime wins (45 and counting) and currently holds the distinction as the only goalie in the NHL to score a goal that won the game for his team. Brodeur’s goaltending style Martin Brodeur’s goaltending style is what is regarded by most as a hybrid style.  Most goalies adapt a butterfly style of goalkeeping, but Brodeur mixes this up with a style where he stands up.  He is known to have extremely fast reflexes with his glove hand, and is very adept at his positional play and his handling of the puck.  He now holds a dual citizenship.  He is Canadian by birth and just got his American citizenship recently.
