Trump Plaza dealers have voted to join the union
Two days after a right-to-work group unsuccessfully sought to cancel or delay a union vote at Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino, more than two thirds of dealers there have voted to join a union. The dealers voted 324 to 149 late Saturday night to join the United Auto Workers union, the group announced on its Web site. “The election victory is superb news for Trump Plaza dealers and all Atlantic City dealers,” said UAW Secretary-Treasurer Elizabeth Bunn. “We look forward to bargaining with Trump Plaza management to secure a great first contract that benefits casino workers and the gaming industry in New Jersey.” A spokesman for Trump Plaza did not immediately return a call for comment. Trump Plaza is the second Atlantic City casino to approve unionization. Dealers at Caesars Atlantic City had their union approved last week when the casino’s parent company declined to contest the results of a vote in which workers chose to join the UAW by a 4-to-1 margin. The National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation, a Virginia group that says it fights “compulsory unionism abuses,” sought to halt the election by filing an unfair labor practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board Friday. The group charged that U.S. Rep. Robert Andrews, a Democrat from Haddon Heights, tampered with the election when he held a rally last week to count union authorization cards signed by employees. Andrews said the claims where “absurd and false.” The NLRB told the right-to-work group it would look into its complaint, but that it would only halt the election or impound ballots if either Trump Plaza or the union itself asked them to. The UAW has also filed documents with the labor board seeking union certification for workers at a third casino, the Trump Marina Hotel Casino.
