After six months of negotiations, WagerLogic Limited and Marvel Entertainment has finally reached an agreement as announced by CryptoLogic Limited. WagerLogic Limited is a subsidiary of Cryptologic, currently one of the biggest names in the game development industry. How the dispute started The disputes started after questions on whether WagerLogic has the exclusive right to use branded online games from Marvel Entertainment. Since 2005, CryptoLogic has been using Marvel characters for their many slot games, running up to about seventeen in number. Some of the well-known superheroes being used include Spiderman, Blade, Elektra, The Incredible Hulk and characters from the X-Men. In fact, the two parties have extended their licensing agreement, covering until February 2013. The conflict started when a subsidiary of Marvel Entertainment Incorporated, Marvel Characters BV, launched a similar deal with Playtech Limited, thus letting them utilize the same characters for their online slot games. According to a statement released by CryptoLogic in April 16, the necessary actions have already been initiated by the gaming company against Marvel Entertainment Incorporated and Marvel Character BV. The statement further elaborates regarding CryptoLogic’s licensing of the Marvel Characters. It also reveals that the game development company first sought to solve the issue without arbitration but then later decided to do otherwise due to different circumstances. Amicable settlement Currently, an announcement that both Marvel and CryptoLogic have reached an “amicable settlement” has reached the media, putting an end to the negotiations. The new agreement involves various changes that would benefit both CryptoLogic Limited and Marvel Entertainment Incorporated. According to interested entities, a modification of the contract will be made, making the license agreement non-exclusive. This will allow both CryptoLogic and Playtech to use Marvel’s superhero characters. At the same time, the cost of the license would be lessened in favour of CryptoLogic. The platforms of the license would also be expanded, covering the mobile arena as well as government licensed in-hotel room systems. Additionally, WagerLogic, CryptoLogic’s subsidiary, will also be allowed to use some of Marvel’s top superheroes for wagering games.
