Perhaps Sammy Farha is best remembered as the guy who went against Chris Moneymaker in the 2003 WSOP Main Event. Though he didn’t win the event, the televised game made him an instant celebrity in the professional poker circuit. This year, Farha steals the spotlight as one of the lucky players to win the much-coveted gold bracelet and the one to take home $488,241 at the $10,000 buy-in Omaha High-Low Split championship at 2010 WSOP. This is Farha’s third bracelet from the WSOP, and it looks like the Lebanese-born poker player is cementing his status as a formidable poker pro. His first win came more than 10 years ago when he won the Pot-Limit Omaha championship and got his first gold bracelet during the 1996 WSOP. His recent WSOP victory marks his first in four years. But what made the victory sweeter is that he won in a very tough field with a total of 212 players, not to mention that most of them are highly acclaimed tournament pros who have won high-limit cash games in the past. The final table On the final table, Farha was up against another skilled player, James Dempsey of England. Prior to the Omaha High-Low Split championship, Dempsey already sealed a win at the $1,500 Pot-Limit Hold’em championship, which gave him his first gold WSOP bracelet. Michael Chow and Abe Mosseri who both had their gold bracelets were also part of the final nine. The finale was as grueling as it can be. Farha had to endure 13 hours that put his skills and stamina to test, especially since Dempsey seemed to have great support from the crowd. Farha even admitted that he was frustrated after playing with a very loud audience who made cheers to his opponent. After a while, however, he got used to it and he continued with his play, not at all distracted. Some of the challenges in the final table also include the heads up play that lasted for five hours. But in the end, it was Farha who emerged victorious when the final hand came. Farha won with a jack-nine beating Dempsey’s jack-eight.
