(Press Release) Punta Cana, Dominican Republic – November 18, 2013 – Guillermo Olvera of Mexico conquered the Punta Cana Poker Classic Main Event this weekend, securing a first place prize of $171,100, not to mention bragging rights. For a good chunk of the tournament Chilean Leonal Otazo dominated after entering the final day with 2.475 million in chips. Guillermo Olvera worked his way to the final two, jockeying for chip lead with Guillermo for over two hours. For a while, it looked the title could have gone to a Canadian or American. Canadian Chanracy Khun entered the tournament in second with 2.36 million, and American Jonathan Iacovelli was the lone American in the final three. In the end, it came down to Otazo and Olvera and an all-in moment that gripped the scores of Chilean and Mexican supporters watching the final table action live, not to mention the thousands of players who tuned in to the live stream at home. Olvera’s Kd7d held up against Otazo’s Qd2d. The flop came Td3s4d and the turn delivered 6c. An Ace of spades dropped on the river, ended it for Otazo and making Olvera the champion. Jonathan Iacovelli took home $62,740 for a third place finish. After two Canadians and an American claimed the first three Punta Cana Poker Classic Main Event titles, the LSOP tournament that was designed to celebrate poker in Latin America finally went to a poker player representing the region. Guillermo Olvera joins Peter Cross, Demo Kiriopoulos, and Matthew Weber as Punta Cana Poker Classic Main Event champions.
