Hillary Clinton Wagers on Gambling
Hillary has taken an unabashedly pro-gambling-industry stance, while Obama has cast a more skeptical eye, though has not come out against the practice. This is potentially a big issue for the Nevada caucuses, seeing as nearly 70% of the state’s residents live in the immediate vicinity of Las Vegas, and the political power structure’s who’s who so often overlaps with gaming interests. Industry executives are forcefully backing Clinton - attacking Obama’s concerns on how gambling disproportionately effects the poor. Legal gambling is one of those issues that elicits visceral reactions. You can find a plethora of studies that both support and condemn its role in our society. One thing is certain, as our country has drifted away from manufacturing toward a service economy, the gambling industry has become more and more important. Twenty-five years ago - gambling was legal in just three states. Today - it’s found in 48. Increasingly - states rely on gaming revenues to fund public schools, mass transit - and infrastructure repairs. Whether depending on gambling receipts to balance state budgets will prove a sound strategy should the country slip into a recession, remains to be seen. Hillary Clinton is backed by the casino industry - and Obama has been endorsed by the casino workers. Both need to wade carefully.!
