Horse racing fans love to bet against the favorites for a reason: if a longshot wins, the payout is big. This weekend at the races, the favorites to win the Malibu Stakes and La Brea Stakes were once again beaten by longshots: and if you were to ask anyone in attendance at either $300,000 Grade 1 stakes race, that made for an exciting opening day at Santa Anita Park! From start to finish, M One Rifle held the lead at the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes. Jockeyed by Mike Smith, M One Rifle ($16.20) ran seven furlongs in 1:21.04, a good 2 1/2 lengths ahead of 2-1 favorite Misremembered. Trainer Bruce Headley rather enjoyed seeing his gelding cross the finish line first, making this his biggest win ever. “I loved it because I wasn’t pressed on the rail,” Headley said. “When you have the 1-hole, you have to run every jump. In these races, you have to have everything go right.” Misremembered, the 2-1 favorite heading into the race, finished second. Papa Clem finished third. But the most exciting win of the day may go to Evita Argentina, who rallied hard and fast to go from last to first to win the Grade 1 $300,000 La Brea Stakes at Santa Anita. “She’s been a lovely filly for us all along,” said trainer John Sadler. “She’s been a little unlucky her last couple of starts. She needs pace. She needs a couple of horses to set it up.” Horse racing at Santa Anita Park continues……………… and there’s always plenty of online horse racing action at Bodog Sportsbook
