Now that the post positions for the 133rd running of the Kentucky Derby have been announced, horse racing bettors will be scrutinizing the field as they narrow their wagering options in anticipation of Saturdays race. Curlin is the favorite, but as we know the Derby isnt so kind to favorites. Yet, based on his past performances, he has a right to be considered the one to beat in the Run for the Roses. Here is a look at some reasons why each of the top contenders could wind up ahead of the 20-horse pack at Churchill Downs in Lexington, Ky. Contenders (with Kentucky Derby odds in parantheses): Curlin (3/1) – What jumps out at you about Curlins three career victories is the decisiveness of each. Hes won by a combined 28 lengths. So although he hasnt seen much action, hes proven he belongs at the top of the three-year-old class. The undefeated chestnut colt starts from the No. 2 position, which is where Affirmed, the last horse to win the Triple Crown, started when he won the Derby in 1978. Street Sense (6/1) – No Breeders Cup Juvenile winner has ever won the Derby. Thats 23 winners of the premier race for two-year-olds who failed to win the spectacle for three-year-olds. But Street Senses victory in the Juvenile was at Churchill Downs and his fast workout this week (he covered five furlongs in 1:01 on Tuesday) point to a legitimate contender. Nobiz Like Shobiz (6/1) – Hes got four wins in six outings but his Beyer Speed Figures have been unimpressive and only in double digits. Trained by Barclay Tagg, Nobiz will start from the No. 12 hole and if the pace is slow, he could be a candidate to close strong. Circular Quay (7/1) – This horse figures to be trainer Todd Pletchers best shot at a Derby winner after going 0-for-14 in his previous attempts. He hasnt raced in eight weeks, though, so there isnt much for bettors to go on other than his pedigree. Hes also starting outside at No. 16, meaning ground will have to be made up at some point. Scat Daddy (8/1) – Hes won some races, but hes never posted a triple-digit Beyer figure and he lost to Street Sense by 15 lengths at the Breeders Cup Juvenile last year. Another of the five Pletcher-trained horses in the field, Scat Daddy will start from 14 and his role could be to make things easier through traffic for Circular Quay.
