Larry Johnson Released by Kansas City Chiefs | IXGAMES
NFL teams looking for a strong player to include in their roster should definitely check out Larry Johnson, who was just recently released by the Kansas City Chiefs. Johnson was scheduled for a comeback after getting suspended for the second time within 12 months. Although the real reasons behind Johnson’s release was not stated by Chiefs officials, this move was for the team’s interest, according to Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley. The controversial Larry Johnson Prior to the release, Larry Johnson was involved in several controversies and conflicts with the Kansas City Chiefs management. When he was drafted from college in 2003 by the Kansas City Chiefs, he was not satisfied because he first thought that it was the Pittsburgh Steelers who were going to draft him. It was also during this time that he expressed an insulting statement directed toward then Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil. After a good year in 2006, Johnson didn’t attend the training camp and demanded more money. However, due to a foot injury, Johnson ended up with only three touchdowns and 559 yards. In 2008, Larry Johnson was involved in another controversy, this time involving team rules. Because he violated team rules, Johnson was benched by then coach Herm Edwards for a total of three consecutive games. A violation of the player-conduct policy resulted in a suspension (in a fourth game) by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. Also in 2008, he ran for a total of 874 yards. However, the Chiefs lost to 2-14. But because Johnson only needed 75 yards to break Priest Holmes’ record in team rushing, he is still considered a strong player. Just recently, his Twitter account got media attention because he posted a gay slur and made negative comments about coach Haley’s abilities. Some have speculated that such insulting comments about coach Todd Haley had something to do with Johnson’s release from the Kansas City Chiefs. According to Haley, however, releasing Jonhnson was for the best interest of the whole team. Johnson also had some run-ins with the law because he pleaded guilty to two charges of disturbing the peace. According to one accuser, Johnson threw a drink on her. Another one claimed that Johnson pushed her head while visiting a night spot at Kansas City. The best side of Larry Johnson Despite Johnson’s run-ins with the law and getting involved in several controversies, Johnson still has a lot to offer. After all, he was able to earn a total of 6 TDs, 55 touchdowns and 5,996 yards rushing, not to mention being able to catch 151 passes for 1,369 yards during his stint with the Kansas City Chiefs. Because of Johnson’s achievements, some NFL teams have expressed their interest in looking into Larry Johnson as a possible addition to their roster. According to Lovie Smith, coach of the Bears, they are willing look into any available player, such as Larry Johnson. Gary Kubiak, the Houston coach, also thinks the same.
