Poker beat out MySpace for No. 1 on Lycos’ annual list of the top 50 search terms for 2006, the U.S. Internet gateway said Wednesday. Clay Aiken was the Web’s most-searched man and Pamela Anderson was hanging in there as the most-searched woman, Lycos said in a news release. American Idol was the most-searched television show; the favorite movie search was High School Musical; and Green Day was the top band looked at by Web users. The Lycos 50 Top 10 Search Terms for 2006 were: Poker; MySpace; RuneScape; Pamela Anderson; Paris Hilton; Pokemon; WWE; golf; spyware and Britney Spears. MySpace saw the biggest jump in search interest in 2006, up 568 percent since 2005. The top news story with Web searchers in 2006 was the Iran nuclear program. Search activity for President George W. Bush dropped 17 percent from last year, Lycos said. Based on the final numbers, 40 percent more Web users were interested in World Cup soccer than in the Iraq War.
