Super Bowl Boosts Local Economy in Nevada
The whole country is anticipating the Super Bowl this Sunday, no less among them the sports books officials and advertisers. Being the biggest sporting event of the year, sports betting organizers expect a big win from the Super Bowl fever. Betting is big in Super Bowl Betting on the Super Bowl is big business. Most sports fans bet on their favorite teams. Steve Fierro of the Lucky’s Sports Book at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno reports that people who don’t normally go out and bet do so during the Super Bowl. And it is not just an individual activity. Ferro further states that friends, buddies, and whole families watch Super Bowl together, and bet even just 20 dollars each on a game for added fun. Jason McCormick, the director of the Red Rock Station Race and Sports further adds that what makes the Super Bowl different is that people actually bet more on the game to add to the excitement. Sports betting on the whole, and not just during the Super Bowl, seems to be doing well despite the economy. Activity in sports betting did not lag, while it was noted that table games and slot play in hotels and casinos are experiencing lesser activity and generating less income. Both McCormick and Fierro concludes that the reason why people continue to bet on sports, no matter what the state of economy is, is because it is a way of cheering for their favorite teams. Millions of dollars worth of bets Last year, bettors wagered a total of 81 million dollars into the Nevada economy during the Super Bowl weekend alone. Sports books are expecting an even bigger haul on this year’s Super Bowl season. Forecasts peg this year’s bets to reach at least 87 million dollars. The forecast figure is mainly attributed to the fact that the match is between the Indianapolis Colts and the New Orleans Saints in Miami. As Fierro explained, the excitement was generated by the Saints being a “Cinderella story.” The two teams were also expected to be the ones to face off, and are now going to do so. This fact just adds to the reasons for making season more exciting. It’s not just the sports books and casinos that will be enjoying the influx of income. Hotels too are expecting some action this weekend. People who have been coming in to spend their Super Bowl weekend in the state have increased the occupancy rate in the hotels. This weekend of betting will also earn the TV industry a bit of cash. There are 100 million people who are expected to watch the game, pushing the advertisers to pay $2.5 million dollars just to get a 30-second spot.
