Canada is heavily favored to win in the men’s ice hockey game against the US. While excitement has been building up for this game, it is just actually a preliminary round, meaning no one will be eliminated. The winner is assured of a spot in the quarterfinals. Canada versus US The betting odds showed that Canada is the favorite over the US. But even if the United States is the underdog in the hockey betting odds, they are actually showing a better performance compared to Canada so far. Team USA has had a 3-1 win over Switzerland and routed Norway 6-1 prior to the match against Canada. However, this was not enough to cover the spread in hockey betting odds as 5-goal favorites for both games. Canada also easily toppled Norway but struggled against Switzerland. They may have been focusing too much on the  game against the United States, which nearly cost them in their game against the Swiss. Sidney Crosby was able to save the game in the shootout. “To go through that desperation and tight hockey, we are going to have to get better as we move forward,” Crosby said. The United States also matched Canada’s enthusiasm for their match-up. Before the game, US forward David Backes was even quoted saying, “Absolutely looking forward to it. It’s the best players in the world on the biggest stage I think hockey has ever been on.” He said that the world is about to watch the game, and it will be a good test of skills against the much-favored Canada team. As Norway lost to both teams, they probably have the most insight with regard to how the upcoming game will pan out. Norway coach Roy Johansen observed that Canada was more physical, while USA was faster and forechecked harder. And so for the hockey game, spectators expected Canada to prove that they deserve to be the betting odds favorite, though the Americans are known for beating those odds. “It’s a game where you want to make a statement against a team that’s favored to win the tournament. It’s another level,” Backes explains. The results As expected, almost everyone in Canada and a lot of ice hockey fans in the US watched the game. Head coach Ron Wilson declared that this was one of the best atmosphere he’s been since the third game of the 1996 World Cup. The US team emerged victorious in last Sunday’s game against the betting odds favorite.  They beat the Canadian team, 5-3.  The outcome of last Sunday’s game placed the US team to the quarterfinals of the 2010 Winter Olympics for men’s ice hockey.   This certainly calls for celebration as the team was once considered an underdog in the betting odds prior to the game.
