Fedor Emelianenko defeats Matt Lindland at Bodog Fight: Clash of the Nations
In front of a sold out crowd that included Russian President Vladimir Putin, the worlds No.1 heavyweight mixed martial artist, Fedor Emelianenko (26-1-0) submitted No.1 middleweight Matt the Law Lindland (20-5-0) with an arm bar in the first round tonight in St. Petersburg, Russia. Lindland came out guns blazing and opened up a significant cut over the right eye of Emelianenko. “The Law” continued to press the pace early and appeared set to take the larger man down to the canvas but was stopped when Fedor illegally grabbed the ropes to prevent Lindlands throw. After repeated grabs at the ropes by Fedor, the Russian was able to reverse the throw and enforce his will on the ground. It leaves a bad taste in your mouth, said Lindlands corner man Dan Henderson (22-5-0) after the fight. Matt made a mistake when they did go to the ground, but at the same time thats a different fight if the referee does his job and Matt gets to the ground on top. Lindland refused to make excuses after the fight but was adamant about the fact that he would like a rematch. “I absolutely, absolutely would like a rematch, said Lindland. Im not saying the outcome would have been any different but thats a much different fight if the referee does what hes supposed to and I wind up on top and am able to utilize my skills there. Other Russian victories included:
- Roman Zentsov (16-10-0) over Frances Kristof Midoux (5-8-0) by TKO at 5:00 into the first round.
- Eric Oganov (5-5-0) over American Derrick Noble (20-9-1) by TKO at 2:55 of the first round.
- Amar Suloev (23-6-0) over American Andy Foster (8-2-0) by KO at 0:26 in the first round.
