US Gambling Stance Angers The EU

The World Trade Organization is not the only international body upset with the US over its gambling laws: the European Union has now also joined the fray. At the end of this month, EU officials will begin discussions with US trade officials over what they see to be a discriminatory and confusing enforcement position. The meetings are the direct result of the US Trade Representatives office unwillingness to answer a questionnaire, which the EU sent them last month, in an attempt to better understand the USs current anti-gambling stance. Instead of answering the questionnaire, the USTR sent back a short, curt response denying any *discriminatory enforcement.* This arguably undiplomatic response to a genuine inquiry, which will now most likely lead to absurd amounts of bureaucracy, red tape and at worst, possibly even economic sanctions against the US banking industry.
