Delaware Appeal for Sports Betting Refused
The State of Delaware suffers a blow as the Third Circuit of Appeals refuses the state’s request to appeal a bid regarding the expansion of sports betting beyond the NFL games. It was thought to be a futile effort as Delaware’s earlier efforts were nullified by a three-judge panel of the Court of Appeals. The speculation was cemented with the Third Circuit of Appeals refusal. Statements from state government officials: Michael Barlow, the chief legal advisor of Governor Jack Markell, was disappointed. According to him, it’s quite rare that the Third Circuit will proces cases with a total of 12 judges on the court, but this was definitely a vital issue for this state, and that they thought that the state should be given the chance to bring the case to trial. Tom Cook, Delaware’s acting finance secretary, remarked that the latest revenue from sports betting shows a substantial increase. According to Cook, revenues have jumped on number each week, catapulting into amounts that impressed him. According again to Michael Barlow, the NFL tried to completely shut down Delaware’s sports lottery. However, Delaware today is the only state east of the Rocky Mountains that has legal sports betting services. In more than 2 weeks, sports lottery in Delaware has earned a significant amount of profits. Despite the fact that the appeal was refused, the state government of Delaware will continue to work with various casinos in attracting more players and creating more work opportunities, which will benefit the local taxpayers. The state government also aims to create work opportunities from various industries to make Delaware one of the best states in starting a business. Suspension of all sports betting?! Meanwhile, a call for suspension of all sports betting has been made by independent Senator Nick Xenophon. The call for a halt is asked just until the Federal Government deals with the Australia match fixing having over as a threat. During a conference with sports lawyers, Xenophon discussed the increased danger of match fixing because of the punters’ ability to earn money by picking winners and losers. According to Senator Xenophon, the US states’ current betting regulations is not enough. The states do not have enough resources in case a possible scandal in sports betting occurs. He also added that what is needed is a regulating system that will actually work; until that happens, sports betting in the US should be suspended. Sports betting surely has shown a huge amount of increase recently, as evidenced in the amount brought in to the State of Delaware, reaching $489,960 on around 32,000 bets. That’s a 31 percent increase compared to the weeks prior to the recent increase, with betting increased to 121 percent and dollars wagered increased to 89 percent.
