Brett Favre to Face Off with Boyhood Favorites in New Orleans
After the Minnesota Vikings, led by Brett Favre and Tony Romo, dismantled the Dallas Cowboys en route to a much-awaited showdown with the Saints in New Orleans for the NFC championship, Favre quietly revealed that he had a conversation with Saints coach Sean Peyton a while ago, where he said that he has been a Saints fan since he was a young boy. Although New Orleans is not his hometown, the 40-year old grew up just an hour’s drive away from the Saints’ hometown, in Kiln, Mississippi. He also played college ball at Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, just two hours away from Bourbon Street. According to Scott, Favre’s brother, they relished meeting the Saints like Manning, Hebert, and Fourcade in their younger years and hung Saints banners on their bedroom walls as kids. Come championship day, Favre needs to take down his boyhood favorite if he wants to bag a third Super Bowl. He and the rest of the team are slated to arrive in New Orleans after a short side trip to Miami. Favre to lead the Vikings Favre is showing the football world that he still has a lot left in him to do that. This is the best season of his career yet, the same season when he become the first quarterback to win a playoff in his 40s. For this season Favre, has thrown 37 touchdown passes and career-low 7 interceptions. He has also attained a career-high rating of 107.2 for the regular season. He has led the Vikings to its first Super Bowl since the 1976 season. With him on the team, the Vikings has gone on to win 12 times in a season since 1975. Favre’s rise to NFL prominence did not diminish his love for Kiln, Mississippi. He still spent his free time in Hattiesburg and experienced the devastation of Hurricane Katrina first-hand along with thousands in New Orleans. He helped rebuild Kiln soon after tragedy, and this move made him some sort of a local hero. Favre, however, is not expecting a hero’s welcome when he faces the Saints. With no Super Bowl appearance and the home crowd just raring to see a victory, Favre knows who they are going to root for. This is not stopping him from preparing to up his game, nor is this stopping his brother Scott from knowing who to root for. Scott had earlier commented that despite their childhood love for the Saints, it’s going to be hard to root for the Saints, with his brother Brett soon to have a face off with the team. Favre, ever the gentleman, just expressed how happy he was for the opportunity to play opposite his favorite childhood team.
