Darrelle Revis Back at Work after a Sit Out
Darrelle Revis, an NFL all-pro cornerback, was back in a New York Jets practice session despite the fact that he still doesn’t have a new contract. As an act of good faith, Revis went back for a voluntary practice session despite a dispute on his contract. According to Rex Ryan, the team’s coach, it’s good that Darrelle Revis was able to join the practice session. He also said that it’s good to see Revis out there. It’s still not confirmed as to whether or not Revis will sit out on future practice sessions. The New York Jets have one more team activity in the coming days and their 3-day minicamp sessions, which is mandatory, will start soon. Details on the contract dispute His contract dispute started when he expressed his views that he should be the highest-paid NFL player at his current position. However, his previous contract states that he will only be making $1 million during the 4th season as part of his 6-year deal as a rookie. Currently, Oakland Raiders’ Nnamdi Asomugha is the cornerback with the highest paycheck after he closed a whopping $45.3 million three-year deal as part of last offseason’s extension. Revis’ six-year contract is set to end after the current NFL season. However, the New York Jets can actually purchase Revis’ last two years back, which can be valued at a guaranteed $20 million. According to Revis, his paycheck request isn’t outrageous or unreasonable, considering that he was second to Charles Woodson of the Green Bay as the Defensive Player of the Year. Coach Rex Ryan has repeatedly stated that Darrelle Revis deserved to get the highly coveted Defensive Player of the Year award. Ryan also stated that he isn’t that worried regarding Revis’ contract dispute, since another person should be handling the issue. But, he is always hoping that the dispute would be resolved soon, with both parties happy with the results. The coach also expressed his views on Revis’ importance as part of the team, stating that “he’s (Revis) the best corner in football,” and that it is easier for the team to win if Revis was part of the New York Jets. Just a few weeks before the dispute contract started, Revis discussed these matters with GM Mike Tannenbaum and coach Rex Ryan. According to Revis, both Tannenbaum and Ryan believed that he should get a higher paycheck. Revis also claimed that the Jets are his family and that he respects them, so he expects the people behind the team to respect him by granting his paycheck request, considering his current position, playing stats, and abilities. Other New York Jets with contract requests It’s not only Revis who has had contract requests recently. D’Brickashaw Ferguson, the team’s left tackle, and David Harris (linebacker) are waiting in line for their long-term deals. Nick Mangold, the team’s Pro Bowl center, has also requested for a contract extension. Possible issues The New York Jets is able to set aside some budget for requests such as these, but according to Tannenbaum, the salary cap and the collective bargaining agreement’s uncertainty are difficult hurdles to tackle.
